Disputed Space for Beloved Goddesses: Hindu Temples, Conflicts and Religious Pluralism in Germany

Abstract

First, the essay presents a few facets of religious dominance and pluralism in Germany. Having sketched this broader context, part 2 will outline the case study of building new homes for Hindu gods and goddesses in Germany. The concluding section shall analyse these institutionalisation processes within the general frame of a 'foreign' religion's access to and representation in the implicitly normative public domain. It will be argued that despite a stated equal treatment of non-Christian traditions, an unspoken hierarchy of legitimacy to claim space in the public domain comes to the fore in such social conflicts. The analysis shall be done from a sociology of religions point of view.

Translation of abstract (English)

Dieser Beitrag stellt zuerst die Situation der Religionen in Deutschland zwischen Dominanz des christlichen Glaubens und einer religiösen Pluralität dar. Anschließend werden Beispiele angeführt, wie der Bau von hinduistischen Tempeln in Deutschland zu Konflikten führte. Aus einer religionssoziologischen Perspektive argumentiert der Autor, dass trotz einer staatlich garantierten Religionsfreiheit und -gleichheit nicht alle Religionen über die gleiche Legimität im öffentlichen Diskurs verfügen. Der christliche Glaube ist immer noch stärker akzeptiert als andere Religionen, die als fremdartig wahrgenommen werden.
