Abstract

This edition of The Introductory Biography of the Hereditary Prince Incarnation (The First Zhabdrung, Ngawang Namgyel) was prepared by Dungchen Sangay Dorji, Secretary of Dzongkha Development Authority for the Centre for Bhutan Studies. The existence of this biography was hitherto unknown, except in Sewala Goenpa's archive, until it was brought to light recently by Dungchen Sangay Dorji. Zhandrung Ngawang Namgyal, who was born in 1594 in Tibet and fled to Bhutan in 1616, unified the Bhutanese princely states as a kingdom and is deemed as the founder of a unique Bhutanese cultural identity.
